Vienna Case City
Vienna has topped the list of the world’s most liveable cities for ten years in a row. As the population grows Vienna’s urban development faces many of the same challenges as other cities:
- affordable housing, getting around the city; integration of migrants;
- disposing of waste and protecting the environment.
In 2011 Vienna initiated the development of the “Smart City Wien Framework Strategy”. With this strategy Vienna aims to ensure the highest quality of life while minimizing resource consumption. This will be achieved through comprehensive innovations. This vision differs from strategies in other cities in one key aspect: For Vienna, the integration of the social component into all areas is an essential element of its strategy. In addition, Vienna has committed itself to implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as these have been integrated into the city’s smart city strategy.
